MULRONEY’S TEXT update flashed across Javi’s screen as he crossed the threshold into Ciarnan’s upper-story apartment. The lieutenant was obviously tired, but the cops were holding their own despite losing a few officers to a vampire pair lurking under a bridge. Javi could practically feel the other man’s fatigue in the words he chose and the sense of floundering they both felt. He took a minute to type out as much as he could remember about what Ciarnan shared about vampires, then signed off with a heartfelt wish for luck for everyone helping in the hunt.

Javi tried not to feel guilty about sleeping or even taking a shower. He’d pushed himself further without sleep before—much further than where he was now—and knowing there were more vampires roaming the city ate at him a little bit. His tired fought a losing battle with his desire, despite all the ammunition he had telling him sleeping with—fucking—the mage would be a bad idea. If he stopped long enough to think about it, he’d go into the mage’s spare bedroom and turn his back on the arousal seething through him.

“Screw that. Because God, I fucking want him. My teeth hurt for wanting him. What the fuck is up with that?” He caught sight of himself in an ornate gothic mirror hung on a short wall between their rooms. “If I’m going to die in a few hours, don’t I get a chance to live as much as I can?”

The day tore at his calm, and even now, his mind was racing about, trying to find an angle to hunt down the rest of the ravenous creatures crawling through Detroit’s rough-scrabble streets. Ciarnan was a bright spot amid the pain and fatigue. And Javi was going to bathe in that light for as long as he could.

“Shit, I can give as good as I get,” Javi promised his reflection. “Because if anyone needs someone to hold on to him, it’s that guy right in there.”

He was tracking filth and sorrow through Ciarnan’s living room, stepping over the sleeping mound of canine lying across the small hallway. Shaddock squeaked at him from a leopard-print ferret hammock slung up in an origami metal shelf unit, but she was back to snoring delicate whistles before Javi could respond.

“Lazy thing.” Javi chuckled then turned, facing the partially open door to Ciarnan’s bedroom.

The sound of a shower going was a welcome one. He felt grungy in places he didn’t even know dirt could reach and the cut above his eye throbbed, crusted over with blood where the vampire’s claw snagged at a stitch. Pressing his fingertips to the door, he pushed the door open, then shut it behind him, keeping the world out of the space for as long as he could.

He found the man naked and under sheet of water pouring from a flat jut in a stone-tiled shower. The glass walls shutting the steam in were moist with condensation, with heavy beads running down through the fogged windows, playing peek-a-boo with Ciarnan’s long, pale form.
